Caltanissetta è il cuore geografico della Sicilia dal quale può nascere ogni visita dell'isola, quasi tutte effettuabili in giornata.
Essa sorge sulla dorsale del colle San Giuliano a 568 metri s.l.m., dominando l'isola, con un panorama che spazia dall'Etna alle Madonie e custodisce, nelle sue viscere, reperti archeologici e rari minerali.
Le origini del suo nome derivano dall'antica Nissa, come testimoniano tre siti archeologici preistorici quali Sabucina, Gibil Gabib e Capodarso dove sono anche presenti tracce di mura greche.
L'immagine urbana odierna di Caltanissetta è moderna, con vie ampie e rettilinee. Tuttavia non mancano edifici storici, soprattutto barocchi e musei che ripercorrono la storia della città attraverso la documentazione esposta.

Today Caltanissetta is a modern town, with large and straight streets. However it still keeps historic buildings of “Barocco” period and museums which attest the history of the city .

La città è nota per le vetuste tradizioni artigiane, per la produzione del torrone e di un famoso amaro, per la sua Settima Santa, per i siti minerari zolfiferi ormai in disuso, ma che fino all'inizio del secolo scorso rappresentava la capitale internazionale dello zolfo, grazie ai 4/5 della produzione mondiale.
Interessante e ben conservato il centro storico, da dove non può che iniziare il giro turistico della città e dove è situato il mercato storico di Caltanissetta, l'unico ancora esistente dal 1882, che ha sede in via Consultore Benintende, volgarmente chiamata "la strata 'a foglia" per via degli antichi venditori di "fogliamari", ossia le erbe selvatiche.
